120 Days to Strong Child Protection Policies, Part 1 of 3 (First 30 Days)
Understand why child protection matters, where to find standards, who should lead the work, and what you already have — so you build on reality, not assumptions.
This is the first of three courses walking you through how to create a strong child protection policy for your youth organization.
Before you can write a strong child protection policy, you have to know what you're working with. The first 30 days are about honest assessment and smart preparation. You'll connect child protection to your organization's core mission, survey your governing documents and culture, identify your standards of care sources, and form the two essential teams — your Child Safety Team and Incident Response Team — who will carry this work forward.
You'll audit what you already have: existing policies, gaps in screening, supervision practices, and incident response procedures. You'll work through legal definitions of abuse and how they compare to your current language, map your visitor and access controls, and build the staffing structure — including a Child Safety Coordinator — needed to sustain this work. By the end of Day 30, you won't have a finished policy, but you'll have something more valuable: a clear picture of where you stand and a team ready to move.
