Identifying the Gifted Child
Gifted children don't always look the way you expect. Learn to recognize giftedness in high achievers, underperformers, and twice-exceptional children — so every gifted child in your care gets what they need.
What You Will Learn
When most people picture a gifted child, they picture a straight-A student who loves school. But giftedness looks very different in many children — and the ones who don't fit the stereotype are often the ones who fall through the cracks.
This course draws on both research and the real voices of gifted individuals to give you a full, nuanced picture of what giftedness actually looks like. You'll encounter profiles like Jonny, who crashes and burns despite his abilities; Beth, whose challenges are masked by the uneven nature of her giftedness; and Jess, who puts in minimal effort and flies under the radar entirely.
You'll explore the full range of gifted characteristics — cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral — including the concept of twice-exceptional children who are gifted and also have learning differences or disabilities. The course also covers practical steps for advocating for gifted students within public education systems and what programs are available in your state.
If you serve youth in any capacity, this course will change how you see the children in front of you.
