Moral Development of Children
How do children learn right from wrong? Explore Piaget and Kohlberg's foundational theories, understand what to expect at each stage, and learn how to guide children toward strong moral character.
What You Will Learn
Children don't arrive knowing the difference between right and wrong. They develop it — in stages, over time, shaped by both nature and the adults who guide them.
Understanding how that development actually unfolds is one of the most practical tools a youth worker, educator, or parent can have. When you know what stage a child is at, you stop expecting them to reason morally in ways they're not yet capable of — and you start meeting them where they are.
This course covers the two foundational frameworks for understanding children's moral development: Piaget's theory of cognitive and moral development, and Kohlberg's theory of moral stages. You'll explore how children move through each stage, what factors accelerate or slow that progress, and the ongoing nature vs. nurture debate that shapes how we think about moral formation.
Reflections, interim quizzes, and a quick-reference handout help you retain and apply what you're learning — so you leave not just with knowledge, but with practical guidance for the children you serve every day.
